Tesla is turning its in-cabin camera into a traffic hack, using it to count how many people are in the car and then steer navigation toward high-occupancy vehicle lanes when the headcount qualifies.

The move could give owners more flexibility to try the technology by lowering upfront costs in a shift to its business model.
