Warm Clothing and Blankets - If your car breaks down in freezing temperatures, staying warm is critical. Pack extra hats, gloves, and a couple of blankets in your kit. Heat-reflective emergency blankets are a smart choice as they trap body heat more effectively than regular blankets. Remember to bring extra layers for any passengers.

Keep at least half a tank of fuel in your vehicle at all times. Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage. Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface, such as on ice and snow. Drive slowly. Always adjust your speed down to account for lower traction when driving on snow or ice.
